The YMCA of Regina is recruiting from the communities of Moose Jaw and Regina for up to three new Directors to serve on the Association’s Board of Directors commencing in the first quarter of 2024. There is particular interest in applicants who would bring skills in the following areas to the Board of Directors:

YMCA of Regina – Board Skills Matrix

In the Skills/Experience Section, rate your level on the subject matter with the description you feel best represents your expertise in this particular area.

Governance*

Board experience in the private, public, or voluntary/non-profit sector, with highest interest in board experience in the not-for-profit sector. The candidate clearly understands the role of a board in governance and the distinction between the role of a Board and the role of Management, and is aware of the duties of the members of a Board of Directors, including their fiduciary duty.

Human Resources*

Management experience in strategic human resource management and brings a strong understanding of the requirement for the Board and Management to strategically work together to address the realities of human resource management in a staff/volunteer, extended-hours, multi-program, multi-location organization, for which significant operations (childcare) are also regulated. Experience with Chief Executive Officer performance management and evaluation is an asset.

Community Health and Wellness*

Experience with and understanding of how physical activity and social inclusion can enhance an individual’s overall health. The candidate brings an awareness of government’s strategic health management and promotion priorities and the relationship between these priorities and the work of the YMCA, including youth mental health.

Fund Development and Philanthropy*

Experience in fund development. The candidate has demonstrated the ability to build strong donor relationships - helping people connect to the YMCA and its mission - and can use fund development to enable philanthropy by bringing together a particular cause with donors willing to support that cause.

Financial Management*

Experience in financial management in the private, public, or voluntary/non-profit sector. This includes experience in approving annual budgets, monitoring monthly financial statements, and overseeing financial reporting. Further, the candidate has the expertise and experience to ensure the YMCA has the financial resources necessary for long-term success. Finally, the candidate has experience reviewing, monitoring, and updating financial policies.

Enterprise Risk Management*

Experience in enterprise risk management. This includes experience managing a deliberate approach to recognizing ongoing organizational risks and creating dynamic response plans with the support of the Board of Directors and Senior Management, and the integration of enterprise risk management into strategic planning to protect the YMCA and enable it to continue to fulfill its mission.

Stakeholder Relations and Engagement*

Experience in communications, public relations, and interacting with diverse stakeholders. The candidate have considerable knowledge of effective advocacy, public and stakeholder engagement strategies, and crisis communications. The candidate will bring an awareness of the broader public policy context which affect non-profit organizations and have an understanding of government’s priorities and the relationship between those priorities and the work of the YMCA.

Legal/Policy*

The ability to think critically about operational and governance issues to ensure effective management of potential opportunities and adverse effects, and has a demonstrated understanding of the legal dimensions of organizational issues. The candidate can interpret and apply legislation, understands the board’s legal duties and responsibilities and the risks associated with matters such as conflicts of interest or breaches of confidentiality.

Strategic Planning and Leadership*

Experience in strategic planning and leadership in the private, public, or voluntary/non-profit sector. This includes experience in establishing measurable goals, approving strategies for the implementation of strategic plans, and monitoring the organization’s progress on an ongoing basis, in a dynamic environment often with changes in the YMCA’s internal and external environments. The candidate will have demonstrated a commitment to staying current with trends and policy issues that affect non-profit organizations.

Child Care*

Experience in childcare or early education. This experience might be from academic or professional experience, working in the childcare or educational sector, having a child or children in or previously in a YMCA childcare, or working in or managing licensed childcare facilities. Nationally, the YMCA is Canada’s largest provider of childcare services.

Community Partnerships/Community Development*

Experience in community development, including autonomy and empowerment, human rights, social inclusion, and social justice. Additionally, the candidate knows best practice models for community consultation and public participation. Further, the candidate has experience or knowledge in community culture, and belonging, including Indigenous ways of knowing and cultural practices. Finally, the candidate has experience building authentic, diverse, and strategic relationships.
