Why do we need Volunteers?
The YMCA of Regina and community partners are conducting another Point-in-Time Count of Regina homelessness on the evening of April 18th, 2018, between the hours of 8:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m., and we are in need of many volunteers.
A Point-in-Time Count, or PiT Count as it’s commonly referred to, is the measure of the number of people living homeless, either sleeping rough (streets, parks, etc) or in shelter systems, counted on a specific day and period of time. It is meant to be a snapshot, painting a picture of what homelessness looks like in that time and place. Key data is also collected to determine significant details about those living in homelessness.
The majority of the volunteers will be needed for the Street Count component. In a street count, the city is sectioned off into separate areas identified as hot spots for individuals that may be sleeping rough. A team of volunteers is assigned to an area, where they walk and look to enumerate and survey individuals during the PiT-Count time frame. Before taking to the streets, volunteers will be trained at the Downtown YMCA of Regina location. There will be refreshments and snacks provided for those involved. Volunteer shifts are 5-7 hours.
Types of positions Needed:
Team Leaders: Team Leaders take on additional responsibilities regarding the safety and coordination of a team of Survey Volunteers in a designated area. Ideally, Team Leaders should have experience working with individuals that are homeless and/or vulnerable populations. Training for Team Leaders: Team Leaders will be trained on Sunday, April 15th or Monday, April 16th, depending on volunteer availability. Training will take place at the downtown YMCA of Regina location. Part of the training will include what is needed to help the PiT-Count Team facilitate training for Survey Volunteers in the hours leading up to the PiT-Count on April 18th, 2018.
Survey Volunteer: Survey Volunteers will work in assigned teams under the leadership of a Team Lead with experience in the field. Volunteers surveying on the street need to be able to stand and walk for up to 3 hours. Training for Survey Volunteers: Survey volunteers will be trained in the hours before taking the streets on April 18th, 2018 at the PiT-Count Headquarters located at the Downtown YMCA of Regina, located at 2400 13th, Avenue.
Headquarters Volunteers: Headquarters Volunteers provide administrative support on the night of the count. The responsibilities include registering volunteers, distributing and receiving supplies, maintaining the snack table, delivering materials to Survey Volunteers in the field, and providing general assistance to the PiT Count Coordinator.
